Uprating Escort Brakes
I decided that the standard brakes were inadequate
for the sort of use that I wanted to put the Escort through.
The struts on XMT 441G are from a 1300 Mk1 Capri which meant
that the discs were thinner than standard Mk2 Escort discs!
The rear brakes were only standard 71/2" drums.
The plan
To replace the front discs with 2.8i Capri vented discs and
the calipers with AP four piston calipers from an Austin Princess.
The rear drums could be replaced quite easily with 9"
drums from the rear of a Mk2 Escort Ghia.
Parts required
2.8i discs, Austin Princess calipers, spacer kit, new pads,
seal kit and two short lengths of brake pipe with the correct
ends.
Starting out
The 2.8i
Capri discs were a straight swap and once the hubs were removed
it only took about ten minutes per side to clean up the mounting
faces and bolt on the new discs.
To fit the caliper around the wider vented disc I bought a
caliper spacing kit from Rally Design. This came with all
the parts needed including longer split pins. To fit the spacer
kit required the caliper halves to be separated. While they
were separated I removed each piston to replace the seals.
It was well worth doing because behind each piston was a fair
amount of 'grunge'.
The replacement seals were not cheap! About £21 per
caliper for 4 rubber rings and 4 metal rings is expensive
in anyones book.
Each Princess caliper should have two brake lines going in
but as the Escort only has one I made up a small section of
brake pipe that goes from one bleed nibble to the second inlet.
This arrangement works but it can take a while to bleed out
all the air. In the future I will replace this crossover pipe
with a t-piece on the strut so that fluid goes directly into
the two inlets. I have a similar problem on the rear where
the outlet from the offside slave cylinder goes across the
axle to the nearside. I will change this by fitting a t-piece
so that each slave has a bleed nipple. |
